What Is a Blood Work Requisition and Review?

A blood work requisition is an order or referral for specific lab tests that analyze a patient’s blood to assess overall health, detect medical conditions, or monitor treatment progress. It typically includes a list of requested tests and the reason for testing.

A blood work review is the process of analyzing the lab results, explaining the findings, and determining if any further action, treatment, or lifestyle changes are needed.

Steps in a Blood Work Requisition & Review Process

  1. Blood Work Requisition (Ordering the Tests)

  • A healthcare provider orders lab tests based on symptoms, medical history, or routine check-ups.

  •  Common blood tests include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) – Checks red/white blood cells & platelets.

  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) – Assesses kidney, liver, and electrolyte function.

  • Lipid Panel – Measures cholesterol & triglycerides.

  • Thyroid Panel (TSH, T3, T4) – Evaluates thyroid function.

  • Hormone Levels (Testosterone, Estrogen, Cortisol, etc.) – Assesses hormonal balance.

  • Vitamin & Nutrient Levels (Vitamin D, B12, Iron, etc.) – Identifies deficiencies.

  • Inflammation Markers (CRP, ESR) – Detects chronic inflammation.

  • Blood Sugar & Diabetes Markers (Glucose, HbA1c) – Screens for diabetes.

  1. Blood Sample Collection

The patient visits a lab or clinic for a blood draw (venipuncture or fingerstick).
Some tests may require fasting (8-12 hours) before collection.

  1. Blood Work Review (Analyzing the Results)

After lab processing, results are sent to the provider for interpretation and review.
The provider checks for:
Normal vs. abnormal values
Trends over time
Potential health concerns (deficiencies, imbalances, risks)
Treatment recommendations (medications, supplements, lifestyle changes)

Patient Consultation – The provider explains the results and discusses next steps, such as:

  • No action needed (if normal).

  • Follow-up tests

  • Medication or treatment adjustments.

  • Lifestyle and diet changes.

Why Is Blood Work Important?

Early Detection of Health Issues (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disorders).
Monitors Treatment Progress (e.g., medication effectiveness, hormone therapy).
Identifies Nutrient Deficiencies (e.g., iron, vitamin D, B12).
Supports Preventative Healthcare & Longevity.
